Learning To Cast Runes

There are several support systems for Runes users. The first of these systems is the Runes user's guide which is built right into the application so that it travels with users wherever they go. This simple, straightforward guide walks rune casters, step-by-step, through the casting process using Runes on their iPhone or iPod Touch.

In order to access the guide simply click the Help button in the lower, right-hand corner of the casting screen, as shown in the diagram below.

Note that the guide's text scrolls. Simply swipe your finger vertically across the text in order to continue reading. When you are finished with the guide, simply click the blue 'done' button in order to return to the casting screen.

In addition to this handy guide, the following tutorials contain detailed instructions and examples to assist the aspiring rune caster.

Focusing Your Mind

Find a quiet place where you can perform the cast. The goal need not be silence. You simply need to reduce external distractions. If you are in a crowded setting and can't escape from loud noise, then simply use your earbuds and play some soft music. Try to keep your body and mind calm.

Focus your mind on the specific situation for which you seek guidance. Avoid vague scenarios or general ideas. Some people find it helpful to launch the application at this point and contemplate the swirling well of runes while they concentrate on their situation.

Selecting The Appropriate Cast

Before you pull your first stone, you must select the type of cast that you wish to perform. Runes automatically remembers and initiates the type of cast performed in your previous session. To determine the type of cast in progress simply look at the cast buttons. The current cast is highlighted in red. You can override this selection at any time to perform whatever cast you wish.

If you seek an immediate response to a given action, perform an Odin cast (shown above). This simple, straightforward reading provides a single rune in response to the caster's intentions. To initiate an Odin cast, touch the single stone button in the upper left-hand corner of the casting screen.

To better understand the circumstances which have led to, underlie and continue to influence your current situation, perform the traditional Norn cast (shown above). To initiate a Norn cast, touch the three stone button in the upper left-hand corner of the casting screen.

To obtain insight into the various forces which may hinder, support or otherwise influence an approaching challenge, perform the Tyr cast (shown above). To initiate a Tyr cast, touch the five stone button in the upper left-hand corner of the casting screen.

To explore subtle aspects of the relationships surrounding your current situation, perform the Freyja cast (shown above). To initiate a Freyja cast, touch the seven stone button in the upper left-hand corner of the casting screen.

Whenever a new cast is selected, an alert is raised asking you to approve the recast. This step guards against the accidental loss of a valid rune cast. Once approved, the existing cast will be discarded and a new rune well will appear.

Pulling Runes From The Well

Once your mind is focused and at rest, you are ready to pull the runes that comprise your cast. Reach into the swirling well of runes at the base of Yggdrasil, the world tree. This well of wyrd contains all 24 of the ancient runes found in the Elder Futhark alphabet. The moment your finger touches the well, the first rune will emerge and be placed in the correct location for the cast type you've selected.

In the case of the Odin cast, the spread is complete and the well of wyrd will fade away, allowing you to interpret the rune's significance. For more complex spreads, the well will continue spinning until the last required rune stone has been summoned.

Pull each successive rune, by touching the swirling well, until the desired cast pattern is complete. Each rune will appear at its appropriate location in the spread. Once the final required rune has been pulled, the well of wyrd will fade away. The casting is then complete and the task of interpreting its message begins.

For instructions on interpreting the rune casts please refer to the appropriate sections in this guide.

Obtaining Rune Descriptions

To obtain a description for any rune and the archetypal ideas it represents simply touch the rune stone in question. The screen will flip to reveal the rune's name, image and detailed definition.

When you are done with this description simply touch the button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen to return to the casting.

You can access this dictionary at any time by simply touching any rune you would like clarified.

Interpreting The Rune Cast

Rune cast interpretation is at once easy and very difficult. Every caster's understanding of the individual runes and the subtleties of the various casts increases with experience. The quality of interpretations is tightly linked to this level of experience. Novice casters should begin by studying the rune definitions provided within the Runes application. Guidance on interpretation is given for each rune in its description. Armed with a proper understanding of the significance of the individual runes, casters can begin to interpret rune casts with increased depth and understanding.

The first, and most important, point about interpretation is to remember that the order of the rune stones in any cast is extremely significant. The very same stone, if it were located at different positions within the cast, can exert a different influence on the interpretation.

The second point to remember about interpreting the runes is the essential integrity of the cast. The runes that form the cast must be seen and analyzed holistically. They cannot, and do not, act in isolation. Just as the placement of a particular rune in the cast influences its meaning, so do the presence of its siblings. A particular rune will have a specific meaning when cast in a particular position, and that fundamental meaning will not change. The stones that were pulled in the same cast, however, should have a non-trivial impact upon the way the rune is interpreted. This casting relationship is very important and is a key reason why all of the rune stones must be cast next to each other and analyzed as a group.

Detailed instructions for interpreting each of the casts supported in Runes is provided below.

Interpreting The Odin Cast

Odin, the mythological wanderer, is said to have sacrificed one of his eyes in order to obtain the secret of the runes. The single stone cast which bears his name is quick and informative. It provides a single rune as a reaction to the caster's focused intent.

This single rune stone, the rune of response, appears in front of the tree. This rune captures the essential and immediate energies invoked as a response to the intended action. For every action there is a reaction. The rune of response points to the possible nature of this reaction. It is an important indicator of short-term flux and is useful when judging the suitability of a specific action or strategy. Consider this rune's energies carefully. Is the nature of the reaction predicted the one you expected?

The Odin cast is, in some ways, very straightforward to interpret since it consists of only one rune stone. Care must be taken, however, to not overstate the intensity of this rune's energies or the simplicity of their application. It is a common mistake for novice casters to read the rune of response in absolute terms. The rune of response is more subtle than that. It points to the ripples on the pond, not to the objects disturbing it. These ripples are often significant and merit greater attention.

Interpreting The Norn Cast

The Norns are the three sisters of mythology who sit at the base of Yggdrasil, the world tree. They represent the past, the present and the future. Collectively they are said to weave the fabric of fate. Each of the three runes in a proper Norn cast, arranged horizontally from left to right, represents one of these states.

The first rune stone, the rune of past influences, appears to the left of the tree. This rune compels the caster to question how he or she got into the specific situation they seek guidance for. The rune of past influences describes the deep currents that carried events to where they now stand. Understanding the past is extremely important because it directly informs the present. When interpreting a Norn cast, ask yourself how your current situation has been affected, possibly even brought about, by the interference of the energies represented by the stone you've pulled for past influences. How does the echo of these past forces color the perception of present events? How has it influenced actors in those events?

The second rune stone, the rune of present pressures, will appear in front of the tree. This rune urges the caster to wake up and recognize the energies that are directly shaping the situation for which he or she seeks guidance. In some cases, the presence of the energies the rune symbolizes will be obvious. In others, it may take careful analysis to discover. In either case it is important to discern the effect this rune is having on the present. How is this rune altering the daily landscape? How will its continued pressure play out? What are the positive and negative effects of this energy in the present? What individuals are acting as agents of this energy? Who benefits or loses most from the change wrought.

The third rune, the rune of future impacts, will appear to the right of the tree. This rune is the most difficult to interpret. It is important to remember that it does not predict the future. Instead, this rune calls on the caster to loosen the bounds of her or his perception and acknowledge gathering forces which may have a strong influence on the situation in question. When interpreting the rune of future impacts seek to discover and understand the many possible outcomes that the introduction of the energies represented by the rune could have. Who would benefit or lose from the introduction of these energies? What actors would likely play a role in affecting these changes? What facets of the situation would be most altered, and in which order? Invest great care in your interpretation of this rune. It can provide the most guidance but it is also easily misunderstood. Remember that your future is entirely mutable. It is not carved in this rune stone.

Interpreting The Tyr Cast

Tyr is an alternate name for Tiwaz, the mythological warrior who sacrificed his hand in order to ensnare the giant wolf Fenris. Tyr was a fabled warrior who fought and won many battles. Nearly every struggle, if seen through the lens of competing forces, can be studied and better understood through the use of the runes. Each of the five runes in a Tyr cast, arranged in a cross pattern, represents one of these competing forces.

The first rune, the rune of situation, appears towards the top of the tree. This rune urges the caster to re-evaluate many aspects of the underlying events which have led to the challenge's formation. Consider past events carefully in the light of this rune's energies. Have you taken all aspects of your present situation into account before acting? How would the factors highlighted by this rune affect your understanding of your situation and the challenges you face? How would they affect your planning?

The second rune, the rune of challenge, appears in front of the tree. This rune signals the true nature of the challenge to be undertaken. Often we mistake things for what they're not and fail to see them for what they really are. This rune compels the caster to consider the challenge in a new light and ensure that the struggle undertaken is the struggle as it truly stands. Have you considered the facets of your challenge described by this rune? How would any differences highlighted affect your attitude towards the challenge? Would they affect your decision to undertake it?

The third rune, the rune of obstacle, appears to the left of the tree. This rune warns the caster of the possibility of tangential obstacles which could hinder his or her struggle with the main challenge. Consider this rune carefully. How could the energies and ideas described by this rune interfere in the challenge you foresee? What influence could they have on your plans? Could they actually affect the outcome? How can their influence be mitigated?

The fourth rune, the rune of aid, appears to the right of the tree. This rune hints to the possibility of unforeseen support in the coming struggle. Keep an open eye and an open mind for manifestations of this rune's energies. How would friendly forces associated with this rune support your cause? How can their participation be encouraged? How can the benefit derived from their aid be maximized?

The fifth rune, the rune of reward, appears above the rune well. This rune reveals the nature of the reward to be gained from overcoming this challenge. It is important to remember that this reward is most often spiritual, and rarely material. The true reward of any challenge is the growth in understanding of ourselves and the world around us. In this spirit, the rune of reward heralds the arrival of important lessons to those alert enough to catch them.

Interpreting The Freyja Cast

Freyja (or Freya as she is often called) is a mythological sorceress whose keen intuition and adept manipulation of relationships were legendary. The subtle aspects of any situation can be better understood if reprised in the keys of relationship. Parallax is real. Change your perspective and you alter your perception. Each of the seven runes in a Freyja cast represents a subtly different perspective of the same situation.

The first rune, the rune of situation, appears at the center of the tree. This rune represents the aspect of the situation to be considered. There are many ways to study any given situation. Each of the runes speaks to one such aspect and calls on the caster to examine the situation from that point-of-view. Have you considered this aspect of the situation before? What insight do you immediately gleam?

The second rune, the rune of self-motivation, appears to the left of the first rune. This rune highlights your motives in the situation or, alternatively, what you feel is at stake. Are your motives clear with respect to the situation? Does this insight conflict with or support your previous feelings?

The third rune, the rune of other-motivation, appears to the right of the first rune. This rune projects how others may judge your motives with respect to the situation. Question your ties to the situation. Could others possibly see your actions in this light?

The fourth rune, the rune of self-awareness, appears to the upper left. This rune reflects the influence that you believe you have over the situation. Does this influence strike you as valid? Is it possibly the product of self-delusion?

The fifth rune, the rune of self-projection, appears to the upper right. This rune hints at how others may perceive your influence over the situation. Carefully consider how this view of your influence meshes with the insight gleamed from the fourth rune.

The sixth rune, the rune of other-projection, appears to the lower left. This rune highlights the influence that you believe others have over the situation. Question whether this belief is justified? Is it the result of insight, fear or simply wishful thinking?

The seventh rune, the rune of other-awareness, appears to the lower right. This rune hints at the influence others believe they have over the situation. Carefully consider how this insight relates to the view provided by the sixth rune.

Freyja was as crafty as she was gifted. Remember her craftiness when you use this complex and difficult cast. It provides ample opportunity for misinterpretation and should only be used by experienced casters.

Recasting The Runes

You can perform a recast at any time. This is especially useful if your concentration and focus are interrupted during casting or if you wish to consult multiple spreads on related issues.

To obtain a new casting, simply touch the button with the appropriate cast pattern in the top left-hand corner of the casting screen. The current cast type is highlighted in red but can be selected anyway to recast that same pattern.

Whenever a new cast is selected, an alert is raised asking you to approve the recast. This step guards against the accidental loss of a valid rune cast. Once the recast has been approved, the existing stones and well will disappear and then a fresh casting will begin.

You may repeat this entire process as many times as desired.

It is important to avoid the temptation, however, of casting numerous times against the same question. After a certain point, the marginal value of further insight from your subconscious becomes trivial. You even risk confusing the knowledge you've already gleamed.
